To reduce cost in optical data communications, only one optical waveguide is often used for both transmission directions, operating on the same wavelength in ping-pong mode, i.e. with alternate transmission and reception of a station. Rayleigh backscatter in the optical waveguide is used according to the invention for laser diode control, said backscatter reaching the station's own receiver photodiode during the transmission mode of the station's own laser diode and not being corrupted by transmission signals during this time. <IMAGE>
