<p>An extensible and retractable telescoping tube (10) positions a test device (16) that inspects large stationary objects (18). The tube (10) has three dimensional adjustment capabilities and is vertically suspended from a frame (12). The tube (10) includes tube sections (30A, 30B, 30C, 30D) with each section comprising a U-shaped housing (34A, 34B, 34C, 34D) secured to a thicker support plate (32A, 32B, 32C, 32D). Guide mechanisms (42A, 42B, 42C, 42D; and 48A, 48B, 48C, 48D) preferably mounted only to the thicker plates (32A, 32B, 32C, 32D) guide each tube section parallel to a reference axis (15) with improved accuracy so that the position of the remote end of the telescoping tube (10) is precisely known.</p> |
