The invention is based on a valve, in particular a directional control valve, which has a valve housing, a piston bore constructed in the valve housing and connected to a pressure connection, a tank connection and at least one consumer connection, and a controlling piston which is movable to and fro in the piston bore and by which, via controlling-edge pairs constructed on it and also on the valve housing, the pressure-medium paths between the connections can be controlled. A controlling-edge pair is formed by an outer edge between the piston bore and an exterior of the valve housing and by an edge on a piston land of the controlling piston. In addition, the controlling piston possesses in front of its controlling edge a guide portion having at least one axial passage. In an earlier patent application, the guide portion is at a distance from the piston land. In order to simplify production of the controlling piston, provision is made in a valve according to the invention for the guide portion to adjoin the piston land directly. All that is then required is to turn an annular groove in the controlling piston on one side of the guide portion.
