In view of the necessary further work step, the use of the ultra-violet lamps, known for the recognition of counterfeit money, in the till area is time-consuming. The holding devices for bank notes nearby or at the till have hitherto been used within the workflow. The invention is to make it possible to combine the recognition of counterfeit money with the previous use of the holding device. When the paper money is inserted into the clamping batten (6), the paper money is illuminated in colour at the fluorescent points and the watermark shows up in the region of illumination. In the embodiment of the inventive idea, provision is made for placing the illuminating means (1), preferably a gas-discharge lamp (15) (black light), in a housing (5), the housing (5) being connected to the clamping batten (6). The clamping batten (6) consists of cut away material (9) or light-conducting material (3).
