In devices for converting biologically decomposable material, in which the material is filled into a standing container (3) at the top and is removed at the bottom with an extraction arrangement (7), the necessity exists for an as uniform as possible material removal over the entire container cross-section in order that there is a uniform horizontal layering in the material column passing through the container (3). According to the invention, it is envisaged to this end to design the extraction arrangement (7) in the form of a travelling screw (11) which passes through the lowest cross-section of the container (3). In particular, the travelling screw (11) can be displaceable directly via a ventilation floor (25) serving for air supply.
