PURPOSE:To attain exact focusing for a long time by detecting the position of a primary object on a screen, and automatically correcting the position of a gate area. CONSTITUTION:A video image-formed on the image pickup screen of an image pickup element 102 through a lens 101 is converted into an electric signal, amplified to a prescribed level by an amplifier 103, and converted into a video signal by a process circuit 104. Supposing that the primary object is a facial picture, the video signal outputted from the process circuit 104 is inputted to a facial picture area detecting circuit 114 being a primary object detecting means, and the position of the facial picture in the screen is outputted. The facial picture position signal is inputted to a gate area correcting circuit 116, a gate area position register in a gate area control circuit 107 is reloaded, and the position of the gate area is moved by the gate area correcting circuit 116. Therefore, the position of the gate area is automatically corrected, so that it is possible to focus the device on the primary object without any correction by an operator. |
