The invention relates to a process for the decomposition of polyhalogenated aliphatic compounds having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, polyhalogenated cycloalkyl compounds having 5 to 8 carbon atoms and polyhalogenated aromatic compounds having at least 5 carbon atoms. A contaminated substrate or the polychlorinated compounds per se are heated with a suitable catalyst to 150 DEG to 550 DEG C. The process according to the invention is especially suitable for the decomposition of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans in soils, scrap loads and waste gases and for decontaminating filter dust from refuse and waste incineration plants.
