PURPOSE:To produce an excellent lubricating effect and to improve running performance and durability by forming a carbon film on a magnetic layer and using a specified compd. as a lubricant for the carbon film. CONSTITUTION:In a magnetic recording medium with a magnetic layer 2 on the nonmagnetic substrate 1, at least one kind of compd. selected among alkylbenzoic acids or their ester derivs. represented by formula I, amine salts of alkylbenzoic acids represented by formula II, alkoxybenzoic acids or their ester derivs. represented by formula III and amine salts of alkoxybenzoic acids represented by formula IV is held on a carbon film 3 disposed on the magnetic layer 2. In the formulae I-IV, R<1> is 6-18C hydrocarbon, partially fluorinated hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon, each of R<2>-R<5> is H, <=30C hydrocarbon, partially fluorinated hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon, at least one of R<3>-R<5> is >=10C group and (m) is an integer of 1-5. |
