CARRIER FOR SKIS AND SKI POLES A carrier for skis and ski poles. In a preferred form, the carrier holds the skis and ski poles upright at the rear of a vehicle. The illustrated carrier includes a rigid frame that is normally mounted on a vehicle and that includes an elongated upright section. Upper and lower holder units are mounted on the upright section. Each of the illustrated holder units is a rigid, generally flat unitary structure made of a tough tamperresistant material such as steel. Each unit has at least one pair of slot-shaped receptacles that each receive an end portion of a ski. The receptacles on the upper and lower units are generally vertically aligned with one another. The lower holding unit includes a portion that engages the enlarged bindings of the skis to provide vertical support for the skis. The holder units also have receptacles for receiving the ski poles. One of the holder units has a portion that engages the cups of the ski poles to provide vertical support for the poles. At least one of the holder units has an openable rigid gate member of the same kind of material to afford easy horizontal access to the ski holding and ski pole holding receptacles. Suitable locking mechanisms are provided to lock the gate closed and to lock the carrier to the vehicle. A bracket is also disclosed for rigidly mounting the carrier so as to limit side to side swaying of the upright carrier section as the vehicle moves, while allowing the carrier to be moved out of the way to the side when access to the rear of the vehicle is desired. |
