PRODUCTION OF 1,5-DIMETHYLTETRALIN

PURPOSE:To stably produce the compound over a long period in a high yield by using 5-(O-tolyl)-2-pentene containing controlled amount of a specific impurity as a raw material and cyclizing the compound. CONSTITUTION:The 5-(O-tolyl)-2-pentene to be used as the raw material in the present process contains <=1.0wt.% of compounds having molecular weight of >=214 and carbon number of >=16 and contains <=1.0wt.% in total of 5-(O- tolyl)-3-pentene and 5-(O-tolyl)-4-pentene. The 5-(O-tolyl)-2-pentene is cyclized in the presence of a catalyst composed of a crystalline aluminosilicate and a carrier and/or a forming assistant to obtain 1,5-dimethyltetralin. 1,5- Dimethyltetralin can be converted into 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid by dehydration, isomerization and oxidation and is useful as an intermediate raw material for organic compounds such as polymerization monomers and pharmaceuticals.
