PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of a failure by removing a porous glass preform in the state of offsetting the load of the preform acting on chucks at both ends by applying the load perpendicularly upward on the preform by means of supporting mechanisms after producing the preform by an OVD method. CONSTITUTION:The chucks 4 and the entire part of the chuck supporting mechanisms are first arranged on a load cell 6 and the weight of this load cell is set zero in the state of mounting nothing on the chucks 4. Both ends of a starting target rod 1 are then horizontally clamped by the chuck mechanisms 4 and this target rod 1 is axially rotated to allow glass particulates to stick on its circumference, by which the porous glass preform 3 is formed. The load is then applied perpendicularly upward on the porous glass preform 3 by the supporting mechanisms 7, 8 to offset the load of the preform 3 acting on the chucks 4 at both ends of the porous glass preform 3 respectively at the chucks 4. The preform 3 is removed from the chuck mechanisms 4 in the state that the load cell 6 is zero. The preform 3 is then heated and vitrified to transparent glass, by which the preform for the optical fiber is produced. |
