The subject of the invention is a method of locating an aircraft in flight with the aid of a satellite positioning system (GPS) (4). According to the invention, in the horizontal plane, the aircraft is located substantially continuously with the aid of the GPS, and simultaneously two fixes are taken using self-contained means (1-3) which are independent of the GPS, the said fixes are periodically and alternately reset with the aid of the GPS, the GPS positioning is compared to the positioning supplied by this fixing, and, if the offset (difference) is greater than a defined threshold, an anomaly in the system for locating the aircraft is deduced therefrom. <IMAGE>
