An omni-directional yieldable joint (14) for a vehicle exhaust stack (12) includes an upper cylindrical member (22) having a pair of elongated pivot sockets (38, 40) mounted on its lower end (26); a lower cylindrical member (18) has a pair of elongated pivot rods (46, 48) mounted at its upper end for riding in the pivot sockets (38, 40) and making the upper and lower cylindrical members (22, 18) pivotable with respect to each other; a pair of springs (62, 64) attached between the upper and lower cylindrical members (22, 18) hold the two sections tightly together and, when the joint pivots due to the exhaust stack (12) striking an overhead object, the stack (12) will lean and the springs (62, 64) will stretch as much as necessary until the stack (12) passes under and clears the obstruction, whereupon the springs (62, 64) will pull the upper and lower sections (22, 18) back into their normally vertical and axial alignment. |
