SEMICONDUCTOR OPTICAL SWITCH

PURPOSE:To prevent loss and to reduce transmission loss by forming a curved waveguide which has a curved part as at least one of two waveguides and forming the two waveguides linearly in parallel at a specific interval in the vicinity of an end surface of the semiconductor optical switch. CONSTITUTION:The waveguide 4 between the two waveguide 4 and 6 is a linear waveguide and this waveguide extends linearly from a switch part 8 to reach the end part orthogonally and also is coupled with an optical fiber 10 connected to the end surface orthogonally without any refracting part. The other waveguide 6 is the curved waveguide with a constant radius R of curvature and straight in the vicinity of the end surface. The curved part and straight part are connected mutually so that the straight part is tangent to the curved part at their contact. Consequently, the end surfaces of the waveguides 4 and 6 and optical fibers 10 and 12 are coupled with each other without forming any refracting part and no refracting part is formed in the whole of the waveguides 4 and 6.
