<p>A method and system for identifying personal possessions belonging to a number of owners includes a set of bar code labels, each bearing a predefined identifying insignia, each insignia corresponding to a unique owner. Labels are affixed to the personal possessions. A set of owner identifiers is stored at a first location wherein each owner identifier corresponds to a unique owner. For each owner identifier stored, a set of insignia data records is also stored. Each insignia data record corresponds to one of the set of labels. At a second location, remote from the first, identifying data is input corresponding to the identifying insignia on one of the labels by scanning the bar code. The identifying date is received at the second location and transmitted to the first location. The identifying data is compared with the insignia data stored in a secure manner at the first location. Where the identifying data matches one of the insignia data records, the owner identifier is retrieved and displayed.</p> |
