PURPOSE:To obtain the title aromatic polyamide-imide soluble in a highly polar organic solvent, improved in heat resistance, solvent resistance and mechanical strengths and being useful as a material for molding film or a material for gas separation membranes by constituting it from specified repeating units. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic acid anhydride halide (a) of formula I (wherein X is a halogen atom such as Cl, B or I), e.g., trimellitic anhydride chloride, or an aromatic tricarboxylic acid anhydride of formula II is polycondensed with a benzidine derivative (b) of formula III (wherein at least four of R<1-8> groups are each a 1-12 C alkyl, a cycloalkyl, an alkoxy, an aryl, an aralkyl or a halogen atom, and the rest are each H), e.g., 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine, to obtain an aromatic polyamide containing at least 70mol%, desirably, at least 85mol% repeating units of formula IV and having an inherent viscosity of 0.1-5dl/g (in N-methylpyrrolidone at 30 deg.C). |
