PURPOSE:To make it possible to decrease gaps among the particles of a molding by fusing expandable styrene resin particles with each other at their boundries during the molding step by coating the surfaces of the resin particles with a specified organic compound and a cationic surfactant. CONSTITUTION:Styrene (a) is (co)polymerized with, optionally, other vinyl monomers (b), and a blowing agent (c) is added to the system during or after its (co)polymerization to obtain expandable styrene resin particles (A) containing 1-20 pts.wt. component (c) per 100 pts.wt. component (A). Separately, 0.01-0.3 pt.wt., per 100 pts.wt. component A, at least one member (d) selected from among a nonionic surfactant, an oxyethylene/oxypropylene block polymer and a normally liquid oily organic compound of a solubility parameter <=8 is mixed with 0.001-0.3 pt.wt., per 100 pts.wt. component A, cationic surfactant (e) to obtain a mixture (B). The surface of component A is coated with component B in the presence of water, and the water adhered to the surface is removed. The product is dried so as to evaporate 3-40wt.% component (c). |
