An amido peroxyacid having formula (I) wherein R is selected from the group consisting of C1-C16 alkylene, C5-C12 cycloalkylene, C6-C12 arylene radicals; R1 and R2 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C1-C16 alkyl, C5-C12 cycloalkyl and C6-C12 aryl radicals; R3 is selected from the group consisting of C1-C16 alkylene, C5-C12 cycloalkylene and C6-C12 arylene radicals; n and m are integers whose sum is 1; and M is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium and C1-C10 alkanolammonium cations and radicals. The amido peroxyacid is useful for bleaching substrates such as stained laundry, dishware and household hard surfaces. A method and bleaching composition that includes a surfactant is also described.
