In the method, long fibres (18) are introduced into the cavity of a workpiece of matrix material, which fibres extend parallel to each other. The long fibres (18) are precoated with matrix material. The thus prepared workpiece is subjected to a hot isostatic pressing process, and thereafter, the workpiece is worked to produce the component (24). The component (24) comprises a sheath (26) of matrix material with a long-fibre-reinforced core (28) of long fibres (18) embedded in the matrix material; the fibres may be silicon carbide coated with Ti-based alloy, which is also the material of sheath (28). <IMAGE>
