In a method for determining a quantity characterising the quality of digital speech transmission, a bit error rate is determined at constant time intervals. The determined bit error rates are stored for a pre-defined longer period of time. The stored bit error rates are converted into the quality-characterising quantity using a transformation rule, the latter being previously determined through evaluation of the subjective quality for different bit error rate patterns within the pre-defined longer periods of time, and the patterns of the bit error rate and the determined subjective quality being subjected to a multi-dimensional regression analysis.
