According to the invention, a ground sheet (51) is laid onto a backing sheet (52) and is then cut to a predetermined shape without the backing sheet (52) being cut. Embroidery is then produced along the edge of the ground sheet (51). A sewing machine with a laser-cutting system according to the present invention is provided with: a needle bar (31) which is movable in a vertical direction; a sheet-holding frame (75) which is movable in an X-Y direction; a laser oscillator (21) for the oscillating emission of laser light; and a sewing-machine table (61). For the cutting operation, the vertical movement of the needle bar (31) is stopped, the sheet-holding frame (75) is successively moved in the X-Y direction, and the laser oscillator (21) successively emits laser light in an oscillating manner. While the sheet-holding frame (75) is thus being moved successively on the sewing table, the ground sheet (51) is cut exactly in a prescribed shape by means of the laser light. Thereafter, for an embroidering operation, the needle bar (31) is moved in the vertical direction; the sheet-holding frame (75) moves intermittently in the X-Y direction, and it is synchronised with the vertical movement of the needle bar (31) and finally produces embroidery along the edge of the ground sheet (51). <IMAGE>
