The invention relates to silverable and shadable glass elements and glass sheets which are characterised in that a light-stable, lightweight electrolyte which contains metal ions and can be reduced with an almost 100% current efficiency is contained between two electrically conductive glass sheets provided with a very thin metal film which cannot be dissolved anodically, so that, after applying an electric voltage between the metal film and a counter-electrode applied to the edge, the metal ions are deposited on the thin metal film, thus changing its transparent and reflective properties, and the previously deposited metal coating can be removed again at any time by current reversal.
