Traffic control system

In a traffic control system, the control parameters are set 16 in accordance with the mode in which the system is determined to be operating 14, the mode determination being carried out by a neural network in dependence upon the detected traffic conditions 13. Past data can be used in constructing and modifying the mode distinction function and control parameters can be corrected in response to detected control results. Alternatively the control results can be exhibited via a user interface to allow an operator to correct the control parameters externally. Plural neural networks can be provided as a back up and on and off-line tuning of the control parameters can be effected. The system can be employed to control elevator traffic (figures 1 - 19), road traffic (figure 20) or rail traffic (figure 21).
