The chains (1) of a tracklaying vehicle (crawler) loop around a deflecting wheel (2) and a number of track rollers (3), the deflecting wheel (2) being mounted on a rocker arm (5), which is supported on a piston-cylinder unit (6), the piston-cylinder unit (6) having two series-arranged cylinders (10, 11). In order to provide a chain-tensioning device which is as simple and as operationally reliable as possible and which, whilst travelling, makes it possible for the chain tensioning to be temporarily suspended and in the event of it being defective maintains the driving capability of said vehicle, the first cylinder (10) contains a filling of oil or grease at constant pressure and the other cylinder (11) can be acted upon by oil under pressure which results in the entire piston-cylinder unit (6) being lengthened by a certain distance. <IMAGE>
