A motor vehicle speed regulator detects signals for a driver set demand speed and from an obstruction distance detector and derives a safety related desired speed signal and control signals for a power control element and/or the braking system when the actual speed differs from the demanded speed. The arrangement can also receive externally generated max. permitted speed signals and signals corresp. to the frictional contact between the tyres and road to enable corresp. max. speed derivation.
