According to the invention, in a fuel-injected engine (1) with a canister (16)-type purge circuit, the fuel content of the purge circuit is estimated using a coefficient K CAN formulated continuously when the valve (20) is delivering, on the basis of the derivative of the richness coefficient, by increasing or decreasing K CAN if the richness coefficient is less than or greater than a nominal value, and the amount of fuel equivalent to the vapour supply by the purge circuit (16, 17, 19, 20) is calculated by multiplying K CAN by the amount of air/vapour mixture demanded by the valve (20). Application to fuel-injected engines with canister-type purge circuit and monitoring of the richness using a lambda probe in the exhaust gases. <IMAGE>
