Process for the production of a double pile fabric separable in the plane of the pile and composed of a top fabric and of a bottom fabric with independent binding warp threads, characterised in that the warp threads (KO, STO) are assigned to a first pair of shed planes and the warp threads (KU, STU) to a second pair of shed planes, the two pairs of shed planes are arranged at a distance from one another, in that, in a first run, - the pattern pile (P) is assigned to a first pair and a binding warp thread (KO or KU) of the other fabric is additionally assigned to another pair, - subsequently, between the shed planes of at least one pair, a weft thread (S1, S2, S4 or S3, S5, S6) can be inserted, and in that, in a second run, - the pattern pile (P) is assigned to the second pair and a binding warp thread (KO or KU) of the other fabric is additionally assigned to the pair which, in the first run, had only a binding warp thread. <IMAGE>
