PURPOSE: To dispense with a dedicated storage space that cannot be utilized for passenger space by providing a convertible top assembly in such a way that it is movable from a raised operative position to a lowered storage position within a storage space defined by a portion of a rear seat means. CONSTITUTION: A convertible top assembly 10 includes a linkage assembly 18, front and rear rigid panels 22, 24, and a back light panel 26 which is simply attached to a pliable cover stretched over the rigid panels 22, 24. When the assembly 10 is lowered and stored, the linkage assembly 18 articulates the panels 22, 24, 26 into a folded condition, under which the panels 22, 24, 26 are lowered onto and stored in a rear occupant cabin. When the assembly 10 is thus stored, the front rigid panel 22 acting as a cover is articulated to a position over the rear occupant cabin, thereby concealing both the rear occupant cabin and the convertible top 10.
