On an electricity supply system each consumer's meter has a data collecting module (MR) which communicates with a central module (UC) at the supply substation. Each data collecting module (MR) has an interface allowing readings to be obtained from the user's meter. The data collecting modules (MR) also have modems allowing data transfer at 600 bits per second over 400 metres of electricity main and a central processing unit for dat storage and analysis. The central module (UC) has a modem for receipt of data over the mains, a central processor for storage and analysis and an interface to the telephone system. ADVANTAGE - Existing electricity supply cables are used for data transmission.
