The invention relates to a retractable safety device in the form of a stand (prop) especially applicable to a lifting device, more particularly for a vehicle comprising at least one single-expanding or multi-expanding lifting jack set into the ground. In fact, the safety device is characterised in that the stand (10) is composed of several foldable elements (15, 16, 17) which, in the retracted position of the stand (10), are folded up inside a housing (14) and, in the contrary case, in the lifted position of the said stand (10) maintain station in one and the same longitudinal extension by means of devices for locking their rotation and appropriate guiding means, this safety device (9) further comprising locking means with elastic return (31) of the ratchet box type capable of allowing the stand (10) to extend while preventing it from folding back up unintentionally into the housing (14) under the action of an external influence. <IMAGE>
