A chair has a chair column (4) on which a front seat support part (6) is fixedly arranged. Attached to the latter, by means of a pivot pin (8), is a rear seat support part (7) which in turn carries a back (15). A seat (10) is supported on the two seat support parts (6, 7). Arranged between the seat support parts (6, 7) is an energy accumulator (store) (48), one end of which engages on a lever arm (53) of the rear seat support part (7) at a distance (a) from the pivot pin (8). This distance can be varied by means of a force-varying device (17), so that the torque exerted by the energy accumulator (48) on the rear seat support part (7) is variable.
