According to the invention, the objective of finding a possibility for the redundant determination of the length or angular position of a body, even in the case of statistically occurring errors in the code track sampling, is achieved in that a bar code track (4) having a unique assignment between code patterns (43) and location of the code carrier (3) has digitally different elements (42) which are in each case integer multiples of the modular width (M) of an elemental module (41), the scanning is carried out by means of a receiver line (5) which is arranged in the movement direction of the bar code track (4) and means are provided for displacing the code pattern (43) picked up relative to a suitably selected line grid (51), as well as means for comparing the registered code pattern (43), brought into correspondence with the line grid (51), with stored bit patterns (72), the addresses in the store (7) corresponding to the position addresses (71) to be output.
