A method of and an apparatus for operating a centrifugal separator 47 having a plurality of cyclones 51 operating in parallel to separate dust in the air stream 44 from a machine of the tobacco-processing industry are described. The object of the invention is to automatically clean the centrifugal separator of disruptive dust which, instead of being conveyed away by air, has settled in the separator and can clog the latter. The solution consists in periodically supplying to the separator brief cleaning air streams or, in the case of operational disruptions, ones of longer duration which remove the settled dust on the path of the dust-charged outgoing air. An advantage consists in the fact that the operating time of a centrifugal separator between two cleanings can be lengthened considerably. The cleaning air may be supplied to a central region 74 of the centrifugal separator for symmetrical outward flow through the cyclones. <IMAGE>
