A method of detecting a substance capable of acting as a ligand, the method comprising: (a) incubating, under conditions permitting cell amplification, cells transfected with DNA coding for a receptor capable of influencing cell amplification in response to a ligand, the cells comprising a marker of cell amplification, with a test substance which is a potential agonist or antagonist of the receptor, and (b) after a period of time sufficient to permit cell amplification, determining the presence or absence of amplification of cells containing the marker relative to cells not containing the marker.
