For butt welding the ends of leading and trailing strips (2, 5) to one another, a laser-beam device is used which divides the beam from the laser-beam source into two component beams (B, C) by means of a beam divider consisting of deflection mirrors and diaphragms. The strip ends held by clamping jaws (4, 7) are trimmed in one working stroke by means of the two component beams (B, C). The resulting strip ends are butt-jointed and, after the first deflection mirror lying in the beam path is blocked out, are welded together with the deflected original laser beam.
