Traction control system for a motor vehicle with an engine with a catalytic converter in an exhaust line. The traction control system has wheel speed sensors for the detection of wheel speeds of corresponding wheels, a wheel slip detection device for calculating the amounts of slip on driven wheels on the basis of the wheel speeds and an engine output governor for reducing the engine output power on the basis of predetermined engine output power reduction patterns which are assigned to the amounts of wheel slip. The engine output power reduction pattern is adjusted so that unburnt hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas flowing into the catalytic converter are reduced when the temperature of the exhaust gas exceeds a predetermined value.
