To produce a PZT piezoceramic, it is proposed that an intermediate compound of the formula ZrxTi1-xO2(ZTO) obtained by the hydrothermal method be used as starting material. A ceramic having any desired zirconium/titanium ratio can be produced from two ZTO powders having different x values, these being mixed with lead oxide and, if desired, dopants, converted by calcination into PZT powder and subsequently sintered to give a high-density PZT ceramic which can be made to correspond exactly to the morphotropic phase boundary.
