A chair, particularly office chair, has as so-called sychronizing mechanism a front seat carrier part (6), fixed in relation to a chair column, and a rear seat carrier part (7) which is pivotable with respect to said front seat carrier part about a pivot shaft (8) and carries a backrest. A seat is supported on the two seat carrier parts (6, 7). Articulated on the rear seat carrier part (7) at a distance from the pivot shaft (8) is a locking lever (62) of a locking device (61), which locking lever has a stop face (64). The latter comes into engagement under gravity with a locking face (65) fixed relative to the front seat carrier part (6). To release this locking arrangement, the locking lever (62) is lifted by means of an actuating arm (67) of the locking arrangement.
