The invention relates to a battery-operated small appliance having a battery compartment (6) and a push-in opening (59) which can be closed on the outside by means of a cover (7). One or more electrical contact tongues (31, 36) is or are arranged both on that end of the battery compartment (6) which is on the housing side and on the inside (11) of the cover (7), by means of which contact tongues (31, 36) the voltage supply is applied to the small appliance (1) when there is at least one battery (8, 9) in the battery compartment (6) and the cover (7) is fitted. In this case, the battery (8, 9) is held by mechanical means (45, 46) in the correct position for being pushed into the battery compartment (6). According to the invention, the mechanical means (45, 46), which consist of spring tongues, are also formed on the inside (11) of the cover (7) of the battery compartment (6) and clamp the battery (8) in by means of a friction lock. This results in particularly simple handling when inserting batteries (8, 9) into the battery compartment (7) without them at the same time falling down from the cover (7) when the latter is not guided correctly by a user. <IMAGE>
