It is known to determine the position of the cursor by panning an infrared remote control up and down or to the left and right in a two-dimensional way over the screen of a TV set. The disadvantage in doing this is that jitter faults which would end up in the passband of a linear low-pass filter occur as a result of an excessively low signal-to-noise ratio. The object is to provide a method which suppresses these jitter faults in a simple manner. For this purpose, the space occupied by the visible display marker (actual position) is detected and delimited by a frame (software window). The centre point of the space occupied by the display marker is the desired position. Displacing the occupied space produces a displacement of the frame which is permanently linked to the visible display marker.
