摘要 The invention relates to a demand-oriented heating method for a catalytic converter (116) in the exhaust gas system (4) of an internal combustion engine (100) in which a conversion capacity (KV) of the catalytic converter (116) is determined and the catalytic converter (116) can be heated up as a function of the conversion capacity (KV). Depending on the operating state of the internal combustion engine (100), different measures are used to heat up the catalytic converter (116). If the heating measures do not lead to the desired success within a first prescribable time interval or load integral (BMax), a diagnostic function is started. Within the scope of the diagnostic function, particularly effective heating measures are used so that it can be concluded that the catalytic converter has been damaged if it is not possible, within a second prescribable time interval or load integral, to achieve a sufficient conversion capacity of the catalytic converter using these measures. <IMAGE>
