<p>Electrolysis comprises: circulating aq salt soln electrolyte through the cell which includes a housing with an inlet and outlet, conductive foraminous grid electrodes adjacent the inlet and outlet and conductive microspheres coated with hydridable metal in contact with the inlet grid; passing current between the grids; and removing heat from the electrolyte at the outlet. Pref the hydridable metal is Pd and the salt is pref an Li, B, Al, Ga or Tl salt, esp. Li sulphate ADVANTAGE : Use of microspheres (described in US 4943355 and 5036031) enhances prodn of heat in the form of heated (heavy) water-based electrolyte, the cell is fault tolerant and has a long operating time to failure.</p> |
