The circuit displays present working status of a video cassette recorder on the screen by outputting a graphic message when there is no image signal for FF and REW. This circuit comprises a horizontal synchronization detecting unit (1) which detects a horizontal synchronized signal from an image signal (YS), a micom (2) which outputs an address signal (AD) for the present working condition, a graphic message control signal (CS), and an output selection signal (SE) which depends on the detected signal from the detecting unit, a graphic screen generating unit (3) which outputs a graphic message by the control signal (CS) and the address signal (AD), and an analog switch (4) which outputs the image signal (YS) and the graphic message (GM) by the selection signal (GE).
