To control the operation of a bobbin winder, the bobbin dia. is registered directly for bobbin winding control. Also claimed is an appts. with a monitor (133) at the reciprocating yarn guide system to measure the bobbin dia. Pref. the control action is applied to the reciprocating yarn guide and/or the bobbin rotary speed. The bobbin dia. is measured at the bobbin where the yarn is wound. The monitor is protected by a shrouding (143) on a mounting (117) apart from the yarn guide.
