The present invention is directed to 4-chloro-2-fluoro-5- (pentyloxycarbonylmethyloxy)nitrobenzene of the formula (I): <IMG> (I) and a process for its preparation. The compound of the formula (I) is suitable for use in the preparation of a corresponding aniline compound. The aniline compound, in turn, can be used to prepare N-¢4-chloro-2-fluoro-5- (pentyloxycarbonylmethyloxy)phenyl!-3,4,5,6-tetrahydrophthalimide a known herbicide.
