PURPOSE: To provide a two-dimensional scroll icon for scrolling data in the client area of a window or a panel. CONSTITUTION: A scroll icon 51 has a home position 57. The scroll icon can be dragged from the home position to any arbitrary direction for executing scroll. The scroll is performed in a direction along a virtual vector extended from the home position to the scroll icon. The scroll icon is moved or dragged by a mouse pointer 59. The speed of scroll is proportional to the distance of the scroll icon from the home position. Characters are arranged on the scroll icon. When these characters are selected, the ON/OFF of visibility of vertical and horizontal scroll bars 39 and 41 along the side parts of the window is switched.
