The method cleans automatically a head set in a drum without ejecting a video tape from a VCR deck. When a head cleaning signal is generated from a key matrix (13), a micom (14) examines the video mode and control a L/C motor (10) to unload the video tape. After unloading the video tape, a head cleaner is placed close to the head and the head is cleaned during a predetermined time set in a timer. After the cleaning operation is finished, the tape is loaded.
