The packaging system protects a reel of ultrathin plastics material. An inherently stable protective sleeve (3) encloses the wound sheet (1) on the winding sleeve (2). The protective sleeve is as long as the winding sleeve and both sleeves project over the front side of the wound sheet. Sealing elements (4a,4b,4) made from elastic material are arranged between the front edges of the two sleeves and the opposite inner sides of the face walls (5) at the ends of the packaging. The elastic seals are ring-shaped with widths corresponding to the wall thicknesses of the sleeves.
