PURPOSE:To provide a method for producing phenol from toluene in high selectivity and yield. CONSTITUTION:A mixed gas containing toluene vapor, oxygen and steam is brought into contact with a catalyst containing vanadium oxide, antimony oxide, tellurium oxide and titania to catalytically oxidize the toluene in the mixed gas in the vapor phase and produce benzoic acid. Oxygen is then added to the benzoic acid-containing gas and the resultant mixture gas is subsequently brought into contact with a catalyst containing iron oxide, nickel oxide, vanadium oxide and an alkali metallic compound to catalytically oxidize the benzoic acid in the gas in the vapor phase. Thereby, the phenol is produced. |
