PURPOSE:To provide a novel compound useful for optically functional materials with excellent photochromism and optical rotation. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I (R<1> is 1-20C alkyl, aralkyl, hydroxyethyl, etc.; R<2>-R<5> are each H, 1-6C alkyl, aryl, etc.; R<6> and R<7> are each H, 1-6C alkyl, aryl, etc.; R<8> is 1-6C alkyl, hydroxymethyl, carboxyl, etc.; X is O or S), e.g. 8'-(trans)-benzamidocyclohexylcarbonyloxymethyl-6'-nitro-1,3,3 trimethylspiro[(2'H)-1'-benzopyran-2,2'-indoline]. The compound of the formula I can be obtained by treating an iodized 2,3,3-trimethylindolenium salt of formula II with a base to produce a compound of formula III which is then condensed with a compound of formula IV followed by introducing a group having properties as an optical resolution agent into the resultant condensate. The compound of the present invention is useful for high-density optically recording materials, optical filters, image-forming materials, nonlinear optical elements, photosensitive materials, etc. |
